Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again at The Whitney Museum of American Art

Since his introduction onto the art scene in the 1960s, artist Andy Warhol has been recognized as one of the most important and influential American artists. Known as much for his innovative art as for his carefully crafted public persona, Warhol quickly cemented his position as a beloved artist and creative genius.

The Whitney’s new Warhol exhibit explores the life of this renowned artist in the first US-organized and hosted retrospective on the artist since 1989. The museum aims to shine a new light on the artist, reexamining everything we think we know about him. Using new research and scholarship prompted by the artist’s death in 1987, this Whitney show explores the whole of Warhol’s career. In particular, it focuses on the work he produced after surviving an assassination attempt in 1968, suggesting that this near death experience led to a period of increased artistic experimentation.

The Whitney exhibit explores how, through his highly cultivated persona and willingness to experiment with new art-making techniques, Warhol understood the power of images in contemporary life, as well as how he helped to expand the role of the artist in society.

The show illuminates the breadth, depth, and interconnectedness of Warhol’s career. Starting with his beginnings as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s, the exhibit goes on to explore to his iconic Pop masterpieces of the early 1960s, his experiments with film and other mediums from the 1960s and 70s, and his groundbreaking adaptations of readymade abstraction and the “painterly sublime” in the 1980s.

A reporter from the Los Angeles Times reviewed The Whitney Warhol exhibit saying, “His 15 minutes of fame will never expire. More than 350 works make up this major retrospective that spans Warhol’s entire career from illustrator to pop icon.”

The Warhol show also draws surprising connections to our modern, digital world, exploring the connections between Warhol’s ideas and works and the influence of social media and the commercial culture of today’s economy.

Nestled in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, The Whitney Museum of American Art is known for cool, cutting-edge, contemporary exhibitions. And this newest installation is no exception. Created by fashion house Eckhaus Latta, this multi-faceted exhibition is an entirely unique experience.

The show brings together art, fashion, and the act of shopping—something never before seen in one of The Whitney’s open gallery spaces. It is comprised of modern advertising images framed inside lit boxes, an eclectic collection of shoppable clothing and accessories, and a selection of artworks (not for sale) that the designers commissioned other artists to create.

For the viewer, “Eckhaus Latta: Possessed” is an active, multi-sensory experience. Not only can the viewer take in the visual beauty of the clothing, the art, and the lit-up advertisements, he or she also gets to interact with it. Guests have the ability to peruse the collection, touching and trying on the pieces while speaking to the hired sales staff, who perform the role of salespeople throughout the duration of the exhibition. Finally, visitors can view the sales footage of the purchases themselves. This sheds a new light on each person’s memory and experience of the show.

The Whitney’s exhibition also crosses boundaries by choosing the designers’ real art world friends and local cool kids, ranging in age, race, gender, and size, as models. Not only does the “Eckhaus Latta: Possessed” exhibition combine fashion and art in new ways, it also proves that something incredible can be created by straying from the tight-knit inner circle of the fashion world.

“Eckhaus Latta: Possessed” is on view at The Whitney from August 3 – October 8, 2018. Don’t miss your chance to experience this one-of-a-kind show!
