Highline Park and the Meatpacking District: An Art and Architecture Walking Tour
The Highline outdoor elevated park terminates next to the new Whitney Museum now located in the Meatpacking District just a few blocks from the south end of the Chelsea art district. Art Smart can create a unique walking tour for you and yours focusing on the art and architecture in this vibrant area. We will select objects and buildings that will resonate given your tastes and interests.
What to Expect
We’ll begin our private guided walking tour with the plaza at the new Whitney Museum at the south terminus of the Highline. From there we’ll head north to explore the outdoor elevated park of the Highline and the stellar architecture that is developing currently along the park. We can offer the historical context of how such an elevated park was developed and stop to discover more about the outdoor artworks installed along the Highline. Along the way, you’ll be able get an overview of the Chelsea gallery scene too that passes underneath the Highline. For those interested in the foodie culture of NYC, we can explore the Chelsea Market as well. As we do not offer public group tours, all of our excursions are private. Your tour will be led by a qualified art historian with a background in modern and contemporary art and experience in the field.
During the customization process, you can let us know your preference in:
- focusing more on the architecture or the artworks
- the depth of historical details and development around the meatpacking district
- stopping to explore food at the Chelsea market or art in the Chelsea galleries
For those interested in purchasing works of art, we can arrange for a behind-the-scenes viewing of galleries’ larger holdings.
For those wanting to combine this tour with a tour of the Whitney, just book both on the same day. We can certainly allow for a lunch break in between.
