Art Smart is uniquely positioned to educate and advise our clients who are considering a purchase in the Boston and North Shore area. Whether you are a first-time purchaser, trade professional, collector or corporation, we will assist you in finding and acquiring the artwork that fits your taste, budget, and space using both local Boston galleries and NYC resources.
Our principal art advisor Judith Walsh has offices in both New York and Boston and will travel beyond these areas as needed to understand the site you want as setting for your acquisition. We have deep knowledge of the galleries in Boston, NYC, and LA, as well as international art fairs and auction houses and can compile a selection of excellent works for your consideration to make the best use of your time in the search. Along the way we’ll provide expert guidance. The best part — choosing what belongs in your collection – is reserved for you.
The Art Acquisition Process, Art Smart and You
We recognize that there are a wide array of choices confronting an art buyer. We start by developing a clear assessment of your preferences and style. We will comb relevant dealers and auctions, and based on your schedule, we will bring you to relevant galleries either in Boston or NYC or provide customized private presentations of options for consideration.
As appropriate, we can augment your engagement by focused Boston museum visits, to give you an eye and a foundational understanding of what the art field values. We can help you understand the drivers of pricing, trends and art-historical themes, and the players influencing major decisions in the art market. We can assist in viewing auction houses and art fairs around the country as well. For those wanting to make acquisitions over time, we will help you craft your collection strategy.
We will provide you research and insight to frame your decision, support negotiation of prices and terms and coordinate the execution from payment through shipping, framing and installation of works. At each step, our services are customized to our clients’ needs.
What is an art advisor vs. an art consultant, art adviser or art buyer?
There are different terms for this type of service (we prefer art advisor). What is critical to understand is who is working for you as the purchaser, as opposed to working for a selling party.
We serve as your representative; we do not work on behalf of dealers or artists, so our advice is objective and independent. At each stage of the purchase process we will provide outstanding service that is attentive and responsive to your individual needs.
