Tips for new collectors?

We know that art is a big topic in today’s milieu, and we want you to be In-the-Know. May 2007’s ARTnews Magazine questions “Are you looking at Prices or Art?” in an article in which experts discuss how market appreciation is affecting art appreciation. The subject is a good one. With the media often going on about the booming art market and out-of-this-world prices, we often allow our tastes and attention to be directed by recent sale trends. While price is at times a great indicator of value, it is important that you do your own homework, and not just on price and value. Any purchase should start with the appreciation and understanding of the artist’s creation. For those looking to collect, I often suggest that you look more, read more and ask more questions on art in general. A great method to build your awareness of the art market is by reading top magazines such as ARTnews, and Art + Auction. And there are many art magazines that focus on particular art fields, such as Asian art, if you already know you have a specific interest. Take time out to peruse the galleries, and build your eye by looking at museum collections. And ask lots of questions when you are considering delving in to purchasing. Get to know as much as you can about the artist, style, etc. by asking those in-the-know.

Get the Goodies: Art collecting we all can afford.

Yoshitomo Nara makes the most adorable and funny objects, and some of them are available in practical household form for less that $100. Nara’s pupcup featured on our homepage is one of our favorites. And his flip clock, which features 84 individual sketches, one for each hour and minute of the day, makes passing time a real treat. You gotta check them out. You can find both and more at www.cerealart.com. The pieces are selling out in several places, and like all art, the prices are variable. If the pieces are more attractive to you when they have higher prices, try EBay, where the flip clock, which can be found for as low as $200, has already reached a price of $400.
